چکیده

This paper presents a Guided tour system for the WWW, called Ariadne, which implements the ideas of trails and guided tours, originating from the hypertext field. Ariadne appears as a Java applet to the user and it stores guided tours in a database format separated from the WWW documents included in the tour. The main advantages of the system compared to similar systems are: (1) an independent user interface which does not affect the layout of the documents being part of the tour, (2) branching tours where the user may follow alternative routes, (3) composition of existing tours into aggregate tours, (4) overview map with indication of which parts of a tour have been visited and support for getting back on track. Ariadne is available as a research prototype, and it has been tested among a group of university students as well as casual users on the Internet.

P-tour: a Personal Navigation System for Tourism

In this paper, we propose a personal navigation system for tourism called P-Tour. When a tourist specifies multiple destinations with relative importance and restrictions on arrival/staying time, P-Tour computes the nearly best schedule to visit part of those destinations. In addition to the map-based navigation, P-Tour provides temporal guidance according to the schedule, and automatically mod...

Supporting Hierarchical Guided Tours in the World Wide Web

Guided tours are well known from hypertext systems as a means to collect hypertext documents in a sequence with a certain meaning. This can be followed by readers using next and previous links. As there is almost no support for guided tours in the World Wide Web so far, these structures have to be built up manually, which not only causes a lot of work on updates but is also almost impossible in...

A Web-based Interface for On-Demand Processing of Satellite Imagery Archives

We describe a web-based control system for invoking pipelined processes on a large on-line archive of geostationary satellite imagery through a World Wide Web browser interface. Our archive of GMS5 satellite data is stored on a combined RAID and tape silo system, accessible from a cluster of ATM-connected DEC Alpha workstations in Adelaide and Canberra. Our system makes use of parallel and dist...
